Basic Assignments Specifically in search of instructors for Summer Swim Lessons, beginning in June.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The swim instructor is expected to work in and out of the water and in varying climates. Major Functions 1. Teaches aquatic classes as scheduled and additional classes as needed.
2. Substitutes when necessary, if possible, where appropriate skills are displayed.
3. Knows and implements the objectives, guidelines, and philosophies of the El Camino YMCA’s swim lesson program
4. Sets a positive example in conduct and personal habits.
5. Insures the high priority of health & safety of all participants in the aquatics program and activities. Knows all pool and spa rules to teach and enforce with all participants.
6. Establishes appropriate limits to provide a fun, safe, and positive experience.
7. Provides a valuable educational experience for participants.
8. Readiness to assist lifeguard in emergency procedures.
9. Submits an incident/accident report to the supervisor within one hour following incident/accident.
10. Reports any faulty equipment or facility problems to the supervisor.
11. Prepares written lesson plans when requested.
12. Displays dependability and punctuality. All equipment and/or materials will be ready for class 10 minutes prior to scheduled class time.
14. Reviews and revises the participants’ skills in a positive manner.
15. Returns all equipment and/or materials to their proper place immediately following the class.
16. Maintains neat and orderly office, storage, and pool areas.
17. Prevents any misuse or abuse of equipment, materials, or facility.
18. Develops and/or reinforces the proper image of the El Camino YMCA:
-Looking neat; wearing required staff attire
-Being well informed about all aquatic activities and programs
-Being aware of other programs, activities, and policies throughout the YMCA
-Displaying a consistently positive and friendly attitude
-Upholding strong, good communications with supervisors and co-workers
-Handling all situations in a tactful and diplomatic manner
19. Attends in-service trainings and staff meetings as scheduled.
20. If needed, finds an appropriate approved staff member to substitute for scheduled shift at least 24 hours prior to scheduled shift.
 
Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position is concerned primarily with prevention, safety, and other aquatic services appointed by the supervisor to the YMCA constituents. This position requires the physical, mental, visual and auditory ability to perform all job functions. Additionally, this position has a supervisory or disciplinary relationship over minors.

This position requires the following degrees, certifications, or qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
• Must be at least 16 years of age
• 1-2 years experience in competitive swimming
• 1-2 years working with children
• Must be organized
• Must be courteous and professional

Minimum Certifications
• Must have current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
• Must have current First Aid certification
• Must have current Oxygen Administration certification
• Swim Instruction certification preferred, or must be able to obtain within 3 months.
• Lifeguard certification preferred, but not required.
