Basic Assignments Shifts available – Tuesday morning 10:00am – 11:00am, and substitutes as needed.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The water fitness instructor is expected to work in and out of the water and in varying climates. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Major Functions 1. Arrive on-time for scheduled class with enough time to prepare equipment and music.
2. Teaches scheduled classes from beginning to end, including a greeting, warm-up, exercise, stretching, and cool down.
3. Instructs participants in proper exercise execution, demonstrates proper exercise, and teaches specific methods to strengthen specific muscles.
4. Maintains professionalism for all participant questions, comments, and concerns.
5. Performs others duties as reasonably assigned by supervisor.
6. If needed, finds an appropriate approved staff member to substitute for scheduled shift at least 24 hours prior to scheduled shift.
 
Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position is concerned primarily with prevention, safety, and other aquatic services appointed by the supervisor to the YMCA constituents. This position requires the physical, mental, visual and auditory ability to perform all job functions.

This position requires the following degrees, certifications, or qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
• Must be 18 years of age
• Knowledge of water fitness instruction techniques and practices
• Ability to select suitable music for class type and intensity.
• Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and class instruction principles.
• Enthusiastic and energetic for long periods of time.

Minimum Certifications
• Must have current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
• Must have current First Aid certification
• Must have current Oxygen Administration certification
• Must have current water fitness instruction certification
• Aquatic Safety Assistant, or Lifeguard certification preferred, or must be able to obtain either within 3 months
