Basic Assignments All shifts needed – Opening, Mid-day, Afternoon, and Closing.

The lifeguard is expected to work in varying climates outdoors. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Major Functions 1. Arrive to work on-time and properly attired to perform duties
2. Open and Close the pool according to guidelines set by the El Camino Aquatics Department
3. Effectively scan their zone of protection within 10 seconds and be able to respond to any emergency within an additional 10 seconds.
4. Limits conversation with members, guests, and other staff members while maintaining and effective “10x10” scan.
5. Anticipate, recognize, and react to all aquatic emergencies, and provide necessary reporting to direct supervisor.
6. Enforce pool rules and regulations that increase the prevention of aquatic emergencies.
7. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time while maintaining optimum scanning vigilance of the pool.
8. Record pool statistics each hour, and report any out-of-range findings to Aquatics Director.
9. Completely and accurately display the pool communication board.
10. Must follow all policies and procedures set forth in the El Camino YMCA Aquatics Department Standard Operating Procedures.
11. Maintain a professional demeanor during scheduled shift.
12. Uphold a standard of care in all aquatic emergencies.
13. Respond to all aquatic emergencies as described by the Emergency Action Plan.
14. If needed, finds an appropriate approved staff member to substitute for scheduled shift at least 24 hours prior to scheduled shift.
15. Attending regular in-service and staff meetings, or other trainings as directed by the Aquatics Director.
16. Other reasonable duties and tasks as assigned by a supervisor for the benefit of the Aquatics Department.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position is concerned primarily with prevention, safety, and other aquatic services appointed by the supervisor to the YMCA constituents. This position requires the physical, mental, visual and auditory ability to perform all job functions. Additionally, this position has a supervisory or disciplinary relationship over minors.

This position requires the following degrees, certifications, or qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
• Must be at least 16 years of age
• Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time
• Must be self-disciplined
• Assertive, courteous, and professional behavior.

Minimum Certifications
• Must have current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
• Must have current Oxygen Administration certification
• Must have current First Aid certification
• Must have current AED certification
• Must have current Lifeguard certification
